A33 Error Code on Insulin Pump

If you want to get your heart racing, and you are a Type I Diabetic on an insulin pump,

this will do it.

Last night my son, who is a Type I Diabetic, was changing his injection site,

and his pump wouldn’t seem to “reset” properly.

He became very frustrated and when we looked up this code A33,

sure enough, it meant the pump was actually broken, finished.  YIKES.

This could have created intense stress, for all of us,

because for one, we live in a small town where on Sunday night, nothing is open.

2.  If the insulin pump is broken, that means we need to go back to injecting insulin via needles,

and since we haven’t done that for at least 5 years,

we can barely remember that routine.

Also, we don’t have slow acting insulin anymore, only the fast acting insulin that is used in the medtronics insulin pump.

What did we do?

1. We called the 800# on the pump, and were put on hold for 25 minutes.

2. In the meantime, we googled A33 Error code, and came up with a www.tudiabetes.org site

which was very helpful.

It confirmed the pump was broken, and someone on the site had left a comment giving instructions on how to fix the old pump in order to keep it working for a few more days,

until the new one arrived.

This isn’t recomended by the Medtronics staff,

because this code does mean the pump is going to quit working,

but for the short term, it did help us to get the old pump working for the night.

.Within an hour, we had it all figured out.

We ordered a new pump,

(our warranty was scheduled to expire in April 2010….2 months from now….that’s luck.!),

and even in a small town,

we got the new pump in less than 24 hours!

I must say, the Medtronics help line, and response time was nothing short of

amazing.

So if you are a Type I Diabetic, pay attention to Error Code A33,….. but don’t panic.

It is a good reminder to keep regular injection needles on hand for these kind of emergencies.
